EPA Workers Receive Emails Warning their Employment could Be Terminated

More than 1,100 employees at the Epa received notification today that they were deemed to be on probationary status and warning they could be fired immediately, according to an e-mail obtained by CNN.

Probationary staff members getting the e-mail have been operating at the company for less than a year. The emails started to head out late on Wednesday afternoon, according to an EPA union authorities.

The exact same message will be sent to other firm workforces, a White House authorities stated. Across the US federal government, the newest data shows there are more than 220,000 employees on probation.

“As a probationary/trial period employee, the firm has the right to right away end you pursuant to 5 CFR § 315.804,” the EPA email to probationary workers reads. “The process for probationary elimination is that you get a notification of termination, and your employment is ended immediately.”

“Each staff member’s status will be identified separately,” the email includes.

The email likewise spells out an appeals process staff members can require to see if they are eligible for extra security.

The method resembles how Elon Musk, now a key Trump consultant, handled layoffs when he purchased Twitter – make a new email alias (in this case, employment notice@epa.gov) and then send mass termination letters to everybody on it.

The US Office of Personnel Management decreased to comment, and the White House and EPA did not react to requests for additional comment.

The EPA union authorities stated these probationary staff members aren’t the very same as at-will employees; they have less defense than tenured staff members, but they have rights to appeal.

The union authorities said EPA will need to make a finding regarding every single probationary staff member that is being let go – either that their efficiency is bad or that they had a disciplinary problem. Veterans and those with period have additional layers of protection. Attorneys who operate at the EPA and employment AFGE, the union representing a large number of EPA employees, are counseling individuals who are probationary staff members on how to react to these emails and waiting to see what further action is taken.

The EPA e-mails come after the Office of Personnel Management sent a mass e-mail to federal workers Tuesday night telling them if they resign now, they would be paid through September 30 even though they likely would not have to work, or could at least keep working remotely.

The email specified that those who choose not to choose into the program – referred to as a “deferred resignation” offer – can’t be provided “full guarantee relating to the certainty” of their position or agency moving forward. It added that, employment needs to their job be eliminated, they “will be treated with self-respect and will be managed the defenses in place for such positions.”

The e-mail, sent from a new federal government alias HR1@opm.gov, consisted of the subject line “Fork in the Road,” the very same subject line of a final notice message Musk sent out to his workers at in 2022.

Musk has made clear in recent months that a leading priority for employment the Department of Government Efficiency, employment which he is helming, employment would be to rid the federal labor force of employees deemed as underperforming.

Marie Owens Powell, president of American Federation of Government Employees Council 238, stated morale at EPA was suffering.

“It’s bad, it’s probably the worst I’ve ever seen,” she said. “I’ve never seen anything like this. Literally every day, folks are afraid to turn their computers on. They don’t understand what message will be coming out next.”

Mass layoffs of probationary employees might disproportionately affect younger employees, stated Rob Shriver, acting director of OPM under President Joe Biden.

“There has been a longstanding battle to get more youthful people thinking about public service,” Shriver stated. “We worked hard to fix that, working with approximately 13% more people under the age of 30 in 2024 than 2023.
